GPlus Media 2015: The Year in Numbers

The year 2015 was a big one for GPlus Media, with growth across all of our businesses and site users, thanks to the inbound surge spurred by the strong yen and anticipation of the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games in 2020. We saw positive growth on all of our sites, with traffic up an average of 20%.

The total number of unique visitors to our sites in 2015 was 16.3 million, with unique page views at 85.2 million.

The hottest topics we covered last year included:

  • National: The 8.5 earthquake that struck off the Ogasawara islands

  • Lifestyle: 21 things people miss after leaving Japan

On Social Media:
In December, Japan Today reached 1 million page likes on Facebook, the first Japan-based English media brand to do so. Social media, particularly Facebook, are an important element in our success. Here, we focus on providing top-quality content and a dynamic platform for interaction with our readers. (We reply to every single outreach from fans.) This strategy continues to serve us well, as can be seen in our organic growth figures.

Jobs network up by 20%

The CareerEngine network, designed to support companies seeking excellent bilingual job candidates, spans Japan and China. It also includes Japan Today, GaijinPot and 30 other partner sites. Growth in 2015 was just over 20%, as the total number of registered job seekers in our database surpassed 285,000 in Japan and China.

By nationality, CareerEngine users span the globe, with the top points of origin being:

  1. North America
  2. Japan
  3. Australia/NZ
  4. Southeast Asia

The top industries represented in the network are:

  • Teaching
  • IT and web based
  • Hospitality
  • Admin and bilingual support
  • Sales and marketing

Real Estate Japan

Up by 82%

682,214 unique users and 6,325,846 page views.

Our dedicated real estate website had a great year, thanks to the soaring number of users renting and buying property in Japan. In 2015, inquiries on the site rose 8%. Worthy of note was the rise in sale inquiries from Hong Kong and mainland China.

The top nationalities of origin are also interesting:

  1. USA
  2. Australia
  3. UK

Average rented property size: 25-30 square meters.

Hottest areas to rent and buy in Tokyo:

  • Roppongi
  • Shibuya
  • Shinjuku

National ranking:

Now in it’s second year, the Savvy Tokyo site represents the niche female expat community here in Tokyo. The site’s traffic is growing steadily, but more importantly we are witnessing the evolution of a loyal following of Tokyo’s most vibrant influencers and decision makers.

  • How to: Kanji cheat sheets
  • Food and drink: Japanese super foods
  • Style: Tokyo Fashion week
